Brad Steadman
Senior Language Officer
Brad Steadman
For the past three decades, Bradley Steadman has been a dedicated advocate for language and culture in the Australian educational landscape. With a career spanning teaching, artistic exploration, and community engagement, Bradley is currently the Language Officer at the Regional Enterprise Development Institute Ltd. (REDI.E), a role he has passionately held for the past three years.
Bradley’s journey into language and culture began in his childhood, listening to his grandmother’s stories. Over the years, he actively sought knowledge from elders, embodying a lifelong commitment to learning. In 1992, well ahead of the popularity of Indigenous language programs, Bradley pioneered a groundbreaking language program at Brewarrina Central School, documented in the 1994 film “Brewarrina Language Program.”
His impact extended beyond the classroom, as Bradley became an integral part of Brewarrina Central School’s cultural learning, even designing the school’s enduring logo in 1995. Post-funding challenges led him to the Brewarrina Cultural Museum in 1996, where he continued his language and education initiatives, bridging the gap between the museum and local schools.
Currently, Bradley dedicates his week to teaching language at various levels. From engaging adults at Orana Haven on Mondays to imparting language skills and cultural understanding to preschoolers and primary school students, Bradley’s influence is far-reaching. He also collaborates with institutions like Clontarf Indigenous Boys Academy and Orana Haven, developing programs to guide youth away from substance abuse.
Bradley’s commitment extends beyond the classroom, with his involvement in coaching football teams since 1996 and coaching the successful girls’ league tag team in recent years. As a respected multimedia artist, Bradley’s repertoire includes photography and video production, showcased in projects like the 2020 Sydney Festival film clip “Gumbirrangarro Dalanngarro” and a 2017 photographic exhibition in partnership with the NSW State Library.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Bradley is the driving force behind the Brewarrina Waroowugagirri Dance group, a well-known local ensemble. Through his tireless efforts, Bradley has not only taught multiple local languages but has also become a symbol of wisdom, history, and culture within the community.
As Bradley’s ongoing efforts shape education, culture, and community, his work stands as a testament to lasting positive influence.
